Are Those Hammerhead Sharks?

I often answer questions while feeding the fish and marine life when diving at Shedd Aquarium.  One of the most frequently asked questions is, “aren’t you afraid to be diving with those hammerhead sharks?”  I generally answer the question in 2 parts.  First these are not hammerhead sharks, they are Bonnethead sharks, and no I am not afraid, we humans are not on their food chain.

The bonnethead, Sphyrna tiburo, also called shovelhead, is a smaller version …

Swim With Whale Sharks Video

Previously, I wrote a few articles about one of my favorite marine animals, the Whale Sharks.  Recently I came accross this wonderful video of divers swimming with a 45-ft. Whale Shark in the Galapagos.  I also found out that Project AWARE has a Whale Shark project which can give you infomation about diving with these wonderful animals.

Mall of America Shark Dive

I was really suprised when I heard about Swimming with Sharks in Minnesota.  But at Mall of America they offer a “Swim With Sharks” adventure at the Mall’s  Underwater Adventure Aquarium.  It is costly at $185.00/dive.  The price includes the following;

a behind-the-scenes tour
a dive in Fisherman’s Hollow (fresh water dive with fish native to Minnesota lakes)
a dive in Sharks Cove (saltwater dive with about 6 species of sharks and other fish)

One thing …

What’s Happening to Our Marine Life?

What happening to our marine life in the oceans?  Fellow Shedd diver Bob Bienick captured this picture of a Hammerhead Shark on a recent dive trip to Socorro Islands 260 miles southwest of Cabo San Lucas.

This beautiful big animal was caught and left to die in a fishing net.  The divers found these and other dead animals such as large mantas tangled in nets.  I hope this picture will …

Diving in Thailand and Burma

I have never been diving in Thailand or Burma.  But after watching this video it has become high on my list.  Even if you are not a diver, you can watch snorkelers swim with a whale shark. I hope you enjoy the video.  It is really well done.

Costa Rica by Land or Sea

I recently spent 10 days in Costa Rica on land, going from the capital San Jose, to Tortuguero on the Atlantic side.  Here we saw the baby Green and Hawksbill turtles.  Then we spent time crossing to the Pacific side viewing the volcano at Arenal, The Cloud Forest and many other sites.  But Costa Rica is also know for diving and seeing Big Animals.

Costa Rica is the ultimate Latin …

a touching ray pool
an undersea observatory over a living coral reef

and much, much more.  Your park admission even includes access to Coki Beach, which is right next to the aquarium.  So the next time you are in St. …

Shark Diving

Chris Shott, ForbesTraveler.com reported in USA Today on some of the World’s Scariest Shark Dives.  You don’t have to be Jacques Cousteau to go scuba diving in shark infested waters.  Just ask his son, fellow sea-explorer Jean-Michel Cousteau: “I took the Duchess of York, who was afraid of water,” he says. “In three days, this incredible lady learned to scuba dive, put a chain-mail suit on, …
