Georgia Aquarium to Expand

The Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta, announced it will increase its size of 8 million gallons of water to 9.5 million, by adding a dolphin habitat which will include a dolphin show and encounter.  Already, billed as the “world’s largest aquarium, the expansion will increase the size and number or animals available for viewing.

Mall of America Shark Dive

I was really suprised when I heard about Swimming with Sharks in Minnesota.  But at Mall of America they offer a “Swim With Sharks” adventure at the Mall’s  Underwater Adventure Aquarium.  It is costly at $185.00/dive.  The price includes the following;

Bonnethead Shark Reproduces Without Sex

Captive shark had ‘virgin birth’ 
 
The bonnethead is a species in the hammerhead group
Female hammerhead sharks can reproduce without having sex, scientists confirm.
The evidence comes from a shark at Henry Doorly Zoo in Nebraska which gave birth to a pup in 2001 despite having had no contact with a male.

Reach out and a touch a Stingray

Brookfield Zoo opens a new Stringray petting pool (video). Visitors can reach over the wall and touch one of the nearly 2 dozen stringrays in the 16″ pool. Most are cownose rays and there are a few Southern Stingrays. The cost is $2.00/non-members and $1.00/members.

Shedd 5-Day Promotion

 

 

CHICAGO Chicago’s Shedd Aquarium will kick off a five-day promotion tomorrow by offering free general admission until Friday (2/19 - 2/23).

The aquarium will also discount admission for its Oceanarium and Wild Reef sections.

The promotion is part of a celebration of the aquarium’s “Lizards and the Komodo King” exhibit that will be at the Shedd until next summer.

The Shedd is the one of nation’s most heavily attended aquariums and is Chicago’s most popular cultural attraction
