Waterproof Your Smartphone

Have you ever heard of Golden Shellback?  Is it not a bird, a plane or a turtle.  It’s a new coating.  This unique coating was applied to an iPhone and a Blackberry.  Each was dropped in a glass of water and guess what?  Both worked after the test.  I not sure I would take my iPhone diving yet, but as divers and snorkelers we are always getting things wet.  This may a good …

What’s In Your Pocket?

Divers and/or snorkelers like to be trim and neat as they enter the water.  The more hanging out, the greater the resistance, the harder to swim and the more air you use.  I try an keep my lightweight and emergency extras in the pockets of my BCD.  I usually carry a small b/u flashlight, my emergency rescue tube, a folding knife and my whistle.  What’s in YOUR BC pocket? Not your American Express …

Gas and Airline Cost Rise, Divers Stay Close to Home

As gas and airline continue to prices go up, and airlines are cutting back flights across the board, divers might want to look at more economical places to visit.  In May I wrote about wreck diving in Lake Erie and the Florida.  In addition there are articles about West Coast …

Log-In Underwater

Here is the answer for those tech savy divers who want instant information entered into their dive logs.  Engadget recently report on an underwater keyboard water-resistant to 60 feet.    The keyboard works on wireless Bluetooth technology and only cost a mere $700.  Maybe my tech guy at Techlife might enjoy this product.

I can’t wait to see the next workstation.

Choosing a New Regulator

The time has come when I can no longer get my Dacor 960 regulator serviced.  So I am going to have to buy a new regulator, but how to choose.  Scuba Diving magazine has all sorts of ratings including this months’ issue, but they also get advertising fees from dive companies.  So, I am also looking for additional help in making the right decision for ME.  Where to start?

Your local dive shop is …

Diver/Snorkeler Rescue

OK my turn.  There have been countless national news stories and interviews about the couple left in Australian open water for 16 hours.  There are 2 sides to the story, the couples’ and the dive operators’, and as we know the truth is probably somewhere in the middle.  This is not about who is right or wrong, but what steps you can do as a diver or snorkeler to help save yourself and/or your …

Scuba Tanks in Accordance With US DOT

As a safety and hazardous materials consultant, trainer, and a scuba diver, I am amazed how many people transport scuba tanks in their cars, vans and trucks illegally.  Scuba tanks or as the US DOT (Department of Transportation) classifies them PRESSURE CYLINDERS are regulated by the DOTs Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety …

Dive Knives

When we first started diving it was cool to carry the longest and biggest knife you could strap on your leg like James Bond in Thunderball.  We were all thinking of protection, as if a big knife would keep you from getting bitten by something large with a mouth full of razor sharp teeth.  Now I carry a 4″ blunt tip serrated knife.

Now divers carry …

New Sealife Underwater Camera

My first underwater camera was a Sealife Reefmaster.  I used my first Reefmaster for over 6 years and never had a leak or a floodout.  Recenlty Engadet and Digital Trends reported on Sealife’s newest underwater camera the DC800.  The DC800 works in or out of it’s underwater case.  Inside the SLR like case, divers can take the camera down to 200 feet.  The camera offers and 8 megapixel resolution and …
