Are Those Hammerhead Sharks?

I often answer questions while feeding the fish and marine life when diving at Shedd Aquarium.  One of the most frequently asked questions is, “aren’t you afraid to be diving with those hammerhead sharks?”  I generally answer the question in 2 parts.  First these are not hammerhead sharks, they are Bonnethead sharks, and no I am not afraid, we humans are not on their food chain.

The bonnethead, Sphyrna tiburo, also called shovelhead, is a smaller version …

AZA Declares “Year of The Frog”

The Associations of Zooz and Aquariums (AZA) has declared 2008 “The Year of the Frog”.  According to the AZA “Frogs are going extinct. While the major culprit has historically been habitat loss and degradation, many of the declines and extinctions previously referred to as …

New Orleans’ Aquarium Saga

What’s next?  The Audubon Aquarium of the Americas in New Orleans is in a dispute with none other than FEMA.  This dispute is about the Aquarium saving FEMA a little over half-million dollars.  FEMA agreed to pay the New Orleans Aquarium $616,000 to help restock fish lost during Hurricane Katrina, if the fish were bought through commercial suppliers.  Instead, the Aquarium wanted to speed-up the process of opening to the public, and went on it’s …
