Great Lakes Diving, Some New to See

Living in the Great Lakes region, I am often asked if I dive in Lake Michigan and what is there to see? Lake Michigan has wrecks, fish and other things to see. The clarity is now about 40-50 feet during the summer, and the water temp in the summer is around 60F to 70F depending on the depth. Some of the more well know wrecks are: Prins Willem V, Dredge #6, Lumberman, Milwaukee, Niagara and Northerner. Allof these, except the Northener are in less than 100 feet of water. But there are also other things to see in Lake Michigan.
Recently a Douglas SBD Dauntless was recovered from Lake Michigan off the city of Waukegan, IL. This is one of over 130 planes believed to have gone down in Lake Michigan (some say as high as 300) during training in World War II. Pilots learned to land on converted flattops which sailed on the lake in preparation for take-offs and landing on aircraft carriers during the war. These planes flown by President George H. Bush, help win the Battle of Midway and the Pacific effort. A & T Recovery salvaged the plane with the permission of the US Navy in about 300 feet of water. Because the plane was in fresh water there was veryy little corrision.
If you live in the midwest and want to find an inexpensive way to “Get Wet” try Great Lakes Diving. Lots of water, plenty of wrecks and a few other sites to see. And the topside value is pretty good too.
