Florida Wrecks

When we think of wreck diving we often think of Bermuda.  Here they hand out certificates for each wreck you dive.  Now that everywhere outside the US requires a passport, you might want to look no further than Florida for wrecks from the north all the way down to the Keys.  Below is a list of wrecks found in and around Florida.  I hope you enough to keep you busy for a few weeks.

Northern Florida Wrecks

The Oriskany, The USS Massachusetts, Brass Wreck, Chevron Oil Rig, San Pablo, Avocet, and Pete Tide II

Wreck Sites From Jupiter, Palm Beach (Lake Worth), Boynton, Boca Raton, Hillsboro (Deerfield), Ft. Lauderdale and Bakers Haulover (Dania) Inlets.

  1. ESSO Bonaire III Wreck GPS Numbers Depth Range
    +4 miles S. Jupiter Inlet 26 57.850 N X 80 00.473 W 70′-90′
    Comment: 150′ Harbor Tanker sunk in 1989 with bow facing S.
  2. Playpen (Miss Jenny) GPS Numbers Depth Range
    +4 miles S. Jupiter Inlet 26 57.803 N X 80 00.449 W 77′-90′
    Comment: About 300′ SE of ESSO (above) 55′ dredge barge sunk in 1991
  3. Princess Ann Ferry GPS Numbers Depth Range
    +2 miles N Lake Worth Inlet 26 47.60′ W X 80 00.230 W 65′-96′
    Comment: 350′ Car Carrier w/58′ Beam was sunk in 1993 and is now broken up. (Dangerous to penetrate)
  4. Amaryllis Wreck GPS Numbers Depth Range
    -1 mile N Lake Worth Inlet 26 47.295 N X 80 00.975 W 56′-76′
    Comment: 440′ Liberty Ship ran aground in ‘65, cut up to lighten and sunk. Laying N to S 60′–77′
  5. Mizpah & PC 1174 GPS Numbers Depth Range
    -1 mile N Lake Worth Inlet 26 47.168 N X 80 00.972 W 63′-80′
    Comment: 185′ Greek luxury Liner & Facing E to W and lies on top of the Patrol Craft. NO TAKE ZONE
  6. MV Castor Wreck GPS Numbers Depth Range
    -4 miles S Boynton Inlet 26 28.739 N X 80 02.234 W 60′-108′
    Comment: Castor is 258′ long w/ 36′ beam. Sunk in 2001 and oriented North South. No Take Goliath Grouper home
  7. Sea Emperor Wreck GPS Numbers Depth Range
    -1 mile S of Boca Inlet 26 19.336 N X 80 03.549 W 48′-75′
    Comment: This wreck known as “Aqua-Zoo” because of the prolific life. Rocks off NE end lead to 2nd wreck, the United Caribbean 200′ away
  8. Rodeo 25 Wreck GPS Numbers Depth Range
     26 13.861 N X 80 03.829 W 70′-122′
    Comment: Sunk in 1999 by Pompano Reef Committee. Rodeo’s bow faces North. Plenty of life.
  9. Mercedes Wreck GPS Numbers Depth Range
    -4 miles N of Ft. Lauderdale Inlet 26 09.365 N X 80 04.510 W,Bow is on N mark Stern on S,26 09.342 N X 80 04.515 55′-100′
    Comment: Famous 198′ freighter sunk in 1985. Ship Broken in half and is sitting on top of reef. 
  10. Tenneco Tower Shallow GPS Numbers Depth Range
    +2 miles N of Bakers Haulover 25 58.932 N X 80 05.202 W 75′-94′
    Comment: The Towers are full of life. Often seen are shark, Cobia, Goliath Goruper and watch the top for Sailfish
