Beauty Above and Below the Water
Two years ago we went on a summer trip to Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada. What magnificent scenery. Our trip started in Victoria and went north to Nanaimo, through Port Alberni, then east to Ucluelet, into the Pacific Rim National Park, and on to Tofino. Most of the trip was land based, however I was able to spend 1 day diving the HMCS Saskatchewan in Nanaimo. The Artificial Reef Society of British Columbia sank this ship.
As previously mentioned in another article, many organizations are sinking ships to create artificial reefs. The ARSBC has been very successful. They have sunk 7 ships and one 737 airplane. The Saskatchewan is being to be covered with by white anemones, and sits in clear water (visibility about 60-100 ft) between 80-100 feet.
I used a 7mm, that was ok but a little cold. A dry suit would have been better. While the diving was great the land trip was spectacular. We saw an abundance of wildlife, eagles, bear, deer, whales, seals, sea otters and more. In addition, the natural beauty of the land meeting the ocean, the national forest, including the sunsets, was more than we could have imaged. Truly this part of the world has beauty above and below the water.
