So you want to become a Certified Diver?

Ok so you think being a certified scuba diver would be a really cool thing. You’re right, divers are cool, want in? “How do I get certified?” is a question I am frequently asked. There are 3 main organizations, which have classes to certify divers, YMCA Scuba Program, NAUI (National Association of Underwater Instructors) and PADI (Professional Association of Diving Professionals). NAUI and PADI courses are taught mainly through dive shops, and the Y Scuba Program is taught at many area YMCA’s. All of the courses will require you to initially buy a mask (this is the red tinted one I have mentioned), snorkel
and fins
to start the class. They courses vary in length of classroom work and pool time. After you pass all the skills you will be required to make 4 open water dives with an instructor to get your certification card (which never expires). That’s the basics. For more detailed information contact you local YMCA or dive shop in your area. Tell us about your open water certification, good or bad, in our comment area below.
