The Right BCD
One of the questions we often get in scuba class is “What is the difference between buoyancy compensators or BCD’s?” There are 2 main features to consider. Whether you want to wear a weight belt or an integrated weight system, and if you want back or front inflation. I own an Oceanic Tour APS, which features both, back inflation and an integrated weight system. The weight integration gives me the freedom of not having to worry about a weight belt sliding down my body, but I always let me buddy know how to drop my weights in case of an emergency. There is a big difference between the regular inflation and back inflation system. A back inflation system will make you float face down on top of the water, but will allow you be more perpendicular underwater, which I really like. Fit is often a important part of buying a BCD. This is where you local dive shop can help. A BCD is a major purchase. Get the features you want, the right fit and you will get more enjoyment during your dive.
